It’s been awhile! Here’s a brief, but needed, update on JuxtaPhoto’s progress:

After making the initial version publicly available many features were asked for and implemented. With the scope of the project considerably larger now, I’ve taken a moment to step back and clean up the code. It’s been a slow process, but with the refactoring almost done and a stable version in hand I can finally start to add in new features! I’ll try to post my progress as I go and will make a release candidate available once I have one.

Also, if you’ve used the forum in the past, you might notice that I’ve removed the link for it. There was just too much spam on the board to deal with. I will reinstate it after I have time to get an appropriate solution up and running, but in the meantime I have put an email link there instead.

If you have any questions about the status of the project please email me.

Let’s face it, if you are a Mac person you probably use iPhoto to manage your photos locally. That’s what I do. After the photos have been imported, weeded through, and organized I decide which which I want online and drag them from iPhoto to my the website’s pending folder. This works, but it’s… missing that little extra something.

What I’d like to be able to do is export from JuxtaPhoto via File > Export directly to JuxtaPhoto with tags, titles, and albums intact. I know this can be done — I’ve seen it done and can provide samples if needed — but alas I ‘m not a Cocoa developer…

So this is my call for help to see if there’s anyone interested in donating a bit of their free time and talent. I can provide any changes need to JuxtaPhoto, a SVN repository to store the plugin code, and, of course, credit. I’m in no rush if you are busy at the moment; I am too with a big move ahead of me. I just wanted to throw the idea out there and see if anyone was interested.

Version 1.5 is almost ready for prime-time. There were a lot of changes and before it becomes official I’m making it available for anyone interested to try out. There were a few changes to the database so you’ll need to run
modules/upgrade.php
once you install the files — as always, please backup your database before hand.

Here’s a list of the improvements:

Supported file formats now include TIF, PNG, GIF, BMP, and PSD.

RAW support is experimentally supported, specifically NEF files. A lot of progress still needs to be made though. You’ll need to be using ImageMagick and additionally dcraw to process these files.

IPTC data is parsed on import and stored in the EXIF array. IPTC Object Title are imported into the photo name, Caption fields into the description, Categories into the tags, and so on.

Added the ability to set an image to be the preview for an album.

Added a copyright field to images.

Added a new setting “ignoreIPs” in
data/config.php
where you can enter an array of IP addresses that the image viewed counter ignores.

Created a new theme “blanched” which provides an alternate look to choose from. You can change this in your
data/config.php
file to take a look. You may need to clear out the
data/compiled/
directory for the changes to take effect.

Feel free to post comments or email me about issues or suggestions that you want in before the official release.

It’s all feature enhancements so it should be a drop in change for upgraders. Just make sure to backup your database as always! There were a few things added to the templates you might want to check out if you are running something custom.

Changes include:

• Slideshows and RSS feeds for any group of photos
• You can now browse by multiple tags on the tags page
• Setting for “search engine optimized” URIs can be enabled in the config.php file (it’s disabled by default)
• Better compatibility with MySQL 5.2.1
• Better compatibility with the GD library
• Other minor interface changes

I was inspired with these last few changes and they have all been released within a short period of each other. With this change out I hope to go back to my prior routine of every month or so.

One focus in the development of JuxtaPhoto was to make the look as easy as possible to customize. The Smarty template engine was chosen, because of it’s simplicity and support, so people wouldn’t need to know PHP to edit their templates.

The default layout for JuxtaPhoto was designed to be generic and please everyone. It’s very easy, though, to create your own design that looks like your website—in fact, the photo section of this website is using the same database and images as the default layout above by just changing some settings to use different templates.

To get started navigate to the “templates/default” directory and open up the .tpl template files you want to edit. These files are are HTML files so any editor should work.
